Nursing: Awards
Because our nurses are so special, each year during National Nurses Week, Randolph Hospital honors their contributions to providing outstanding quality care with a full calendar of special events including awarding the Mia Curry Nurse of the Year and the Nursing Assistant of the Year. Staff nominate a beside nurse and/or a nursing assistant (including OR), for this prestigious award.
The Nurse (RN) and Nursing Assistant (NA) of the Year program was established in 2005 as a means to enable co-workers to recognize their peers for the exceptional work they do every day. Nurses are nominated based on their dedication to the nursing profession, advocacy, team support, educational achievements and community outreach. The final selection is made by a four-person panel comprised of two hospital employees, a physician and a member of the Randolph Hospital Board of Directors.
2008 RN of the Year:
Tracie Cole
Tracie
Cole, RN on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), has been an employee
at Randolph Hospital for seven years. Upon coming to work at Randolph
Hospital, Cole completed an internship on the Medical Pediatric
Services (MPS) and then transferred to ICU where she has worked
since. For the past two years, she has served in a leadership position
as a Unit Coordinator in her department.
For continually going the extra mile, Cole has received numerous C.A.R.E. Awards, hospital recognition awards, from families for the compassionate care she provides. For instance, one night she was caring for a critical patient and during her shift she bonded with the patient and his family. Later into her shift, the man passed. Even though Cole’s shift ended several hours earlier, she stayed with the family, giving constant support and compassion throughout the night.
Working in ICU often times Cole’s role requires her to have difficult conversations with families and loved ones regarding end-of-life decisions. They’re not easy conversations and often times there just aren’t the right words to ease the pain of losing a loved one, but Cole handles each and every situation with dignity and respect for all.
2008 Nursing Assistant of the Year: Paul Luther
Nursing
Assistant of the Year, Paul Luther, NA, is described by his peers
as being an exceptional caregiver, passionate about his work and
dedicated to making sure others receive the best care possible.
Luther, who is also known for always going above and beyond, has
been employed as a Nursing Assistant at Randolph Hospital for the
past 30 years.
“Providing quality care for the patient is the most important thing I can do,” says Luther. “Sometimes the best therapy is holding a hand or giving a reassuring smile to a patient.”
As was stated in his nominations form. “Luther is a great role model and always takes patient care to the next level. If you can’t readily find him, don’t worry, he can usually be found providing one-on-one comfort for patients by simply holding a hand or offering words of encouragement,” “I love what I do,” notes Luther. “I am very proud to receive this award because I find each day working at Randolph Hospital not only rewarding professionally, but emotionally fulfilling.”
