SOAR at Preschool

SOAR at Preschool promotes healthy eating and physical activity in young children in preschool settings. SOAR at Preschool is a pilot project that blends two existing well known and researched based models:  Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care (NAP SACC) and I Am Moving, I Am Learning (IMIL).

The goals of SOAR at Preschool are:

  • To provide child care facilities with a system and tools to assess their own nutrition and physical activity environment and make changes that support healthy weight among children.
  • To promote and increase the time preschool children spend in moderate to vigorous physical activity in child care settings by providing plenty of indoor/outdoor active time and role modeling an active lifestyle
  • To improve the quality of structured movement experiences intentionally facilitated by child care providers.
  • To promote healthy eating in preschool age children in child care settings by serving appropriate foods and role modeling healthy eating behaviors.
  • To reach out to parents through child care settings to promote healthy lifestyle behaviors at home.

Participating preschool teachers and staff attend a two day intensive training program, with follow-up support provided by the trainers and health consultants.
