Bronchoscopy

Bronchoscopies conducted at Randolph Hospital allow a doctor to see inside a person's airway, which includes the throat, larynx, trachea and lower bronchial airways of the lungs. This procedure can help the doctor see wounds and foreign objects and help identify problems that may be causing inflammation and bleeding in the airway. Bronchoscopy can also be used to diagnose and to determine the extent of lung cancer.

Bronchoscopies are used to:

• Identify problems that may be causing inflammation and bleeding.
• Diagnose certain lung diseases. This is done by collecting samples of lung tissue for biopsy or by collecting mucus (sputum) samples to be examined in a lab for specific abnormalities or infections.
• Diagnose and determine the extent of lung cancer.
• Remove foreign objects or thick mucus that may be blocking the airway.
• Destroy growths in the airway.
