What is the Breast Outreach & Navigation Program?

A:Randolph Cancer Center’s Breast Outreach & Navigation Program is a program that will not only educate the women of Randolph County about routine breast health, but also proactively guide patients through and around barriers in the complex cancer care system. It ensures that all patients with suspicious findings, those who have had a test indicating they may have cancer receive, follow-up, timely diagnosis and treatment to achieve better outcomes.

What types of barriers are there to cancer care?

A: There are several barriers to accessing information and care, which can result in late diagnosis and, therefore, high mortality rates. A few of these barriers may include:

  • Financial
  • Language
  • Transportation

What is the goal of the Breast Outreach & Navigation Program?

A: The main goals of the Breast Outreach & Navigation Program are to save lives from cancer, to eliminate barriers to care and ensure timely delivery of services.

How does the Breast Outreach & Navigation Program work?

A: The Program works by providing one person, the Breast Outreach & Navigation Coordinator, who guides the patient through the healthcare system. The Breast Outreach & Navigation Coordinator helps to make sure the patient does not, “fall through the cracks” due to lack of follow-up care within the system. Some of the tasks of the Breast Outreach & Navigation Coordinator include:

  • Providing educational material about routine breast examinations.
  • Connecting with local physicians about the program.
  • Providing information about community cancer resources.
  • Bridging cultural and linguistic barriers or gaps.
  • Finding financial resources.
  • Tracking appointments.
  • Coordinating transportation.
  • Referring to appropriate services (ex. social services).
