The radiation oncologist is a physician specially trained in treating cancer through radiation therapies and methods. Radiation oncologists investigate the use of x-rays, electrons and gamma rays to destroy cancer.
A radiation oncologist leads the radiation treatment team. He/She will prescribe an individualized course of treatment, define the areas to treat, and design the treatment with the help of the other cancer team members. Radiation can be given as a curative modality, either alone or in combination with surgery and or chemotherapy. A radiation oncologist has undergone four years of residency in addition to an internship. During this time they learn about oncology, the physics and biology of ionizing radiation and the treatment of cancer patients with radiation.
Our facility is staffed full-time with Board Certified Radiation Oncologists with technical support from our physics, Dosimetry staff, experienced radiation therapists, nurses and other support staff.
In radiation treatments and patient care we strive to offer excellence from each patient's first introduction to the department, during and after their treatment. We work with each patient's other health care providers to both customize and coordinate their care. We believe that good cancer treatment and recovery involves caring for the whole patient and is a team effort.
