Quality Patient Care

Frequently Asked
Questions About Reports

What are the Quality Reports?

Randolph Hospital publishes quality reports five disease categories: Heart Attack, Pneumonia, Heart Failure, Total Hip & Knee Replacement and Surgical Care Improvement. These reports include the Appropriate Care Score (ACS), the Mortality Observed/Expected Ratio (O/E Ratio), Complication Observed/Expected Ratio (O/E Ratio) and the Being Readmitted within 30 Days Observed/Expected Ratio (O/E Ratio). These indicators are used since they show various outcomes for specific diseases, which is different from other sources which show compliance with completing processes for specific disease care. Randolph Hospital believes these four indicators provide great insight as to the overall quality of care by highlighting the final outcomes for each disease category.

Appropriate Care Score

Also known as the perfect process score, it's the percent of patients that received all the recommended and needed care that is monitored by the Quality Department.

Mortality Observed/Expected Ratio (O/E Ratio)

A ratio of less than 1.00 is better than expected. When the result is less than 1.00, patients did not die even when they were expected to due to their illnesses. (Note: A ratio lower than 1.00 is good.)

Complication Observed/Expected Ratio (O/E Ratio)

A ratio of less than 1.00 is better than expected. When the result is less than 1.00, patients did not have as many problems as they would be expected to have because of their type of illnesses and treatments. (Note: A ratio lower than 1.00 is good.)

Being Readmitted within 30 Days of Leaving the Hospital Index

An index of less than 1.00 is better than expected. When the result is less than 1.00, patients were able to stay out of the hospital more often than would be expected based on the type of illnesses they have. (Note: An index lower than 1.00 is good.)

Being Readmitted within 30 Days of Leaving the Hospital Observed/Expected Ratio (O/E Ratio)

A ratio of less than 1.00 is better than expected. When the result is less than 1.00, patients were able to stay out of the hospital more often than would be expected based on the type of illnesses they have. (Note: A ratio lower than 1.00 is good.)

What if I want to know more about the data?

More information is available by e-mailing amt@randolphhospital.org.

How were these disease categories selected?

These categories were selected as they are among the most common reasons why people go to hospitals. These categories have been monitored to evaluate the quality of healthcare delivery and are the same areas currently being recommended by the Federal and State government as areas of importance.

Does the quality report include data about individual physicians?

No. We are publishing hospital data only.

Why is Randolph Hospital publishing its quality data?

As a not-for-profit hospital and community resource, we believe that you should know how we are performing. We want our patients, families and this community to have the opportunity to better understand the quality of care provided at our facility.

By tracking this information we have improved as an organization and are successfully documenting the care we provide and capturing the processes which lead to better outcomes - making room for continually improved patient care.

These reports will be updated quarterly.
