Hospital Consumer Assessment
of Healthcare Providers (HCAHPS)

In October 2006, two agencies from the Department of Health & Human Services, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), added a new wrinkle to the healthcare surveying process. Their intent was to introduce a national standardized survey instrument and data collection methodology for measuring and publicly reporting patients’ perspectives of hospital care.

The result was a new survey tool called the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Health Plans (HCAHPS). This survey asks the customer to report their experiences based on a ratings scale of Never, Sometimes, Usually and Always. This new survey tool has been added to our existing Press Ganey survey, and is mailed to customers who have been discharged from Inpatient stays only. There are 27 additional HCAHPS questions added to the current Press Ganey Inpatient survey that covers the areas of Communication with Nurses, Communication with Doctors, Communication about Medications, Responsiveness of Hospital Staff, Pain Control, Physical Environment and Discharge Information.

The HCAHPS survey gives the customer the ability to make an informed decision when selecting a hospital. By logging onto the Hospital Compare website, you have the opportunity to obtain comparison information for Randolph Hospital, along side two other participating Hospitals in North Carolina and across the United States. Since the results will be reported publicly, it will act as an incentive for Hospitals to improve the care it offers through increased accountability.
