Increasing Physical Activity

Children should be physically active for a minimum of 60 minutes per day. Children who are physically active are more likely to be active as an adult. Show your children you value their health by increasing your family's level of physical activity. Have fun and play with your child. Playing together builds a lifetime of being physically active.

10 Tips to increase Family Physical Activity

  • Take a walk together as a family after dinner.
  • Create a garden- a vegetable garden, even a small garden, is a great way to be active and eat healthier at the same time.
  • Take the stairs- use the steps instead of the escalator or elevator.
  • Play a game. Choose an age appropriate game to play with your children (rolling/tossing a soft ball with toddlers, tag with young children, basketball or baseball with older children).
  • Children love bubbles! Blow bubbles for your children to catch.
  • Put on music and dance. Teach your children dances you did a child like the Hokey Pokey or the Twist.
  • Have a parade- pretend to play instruments and march.
  • Play zoo- pretend to move like the animals at the zoo or animals in the forest.
  • Play "active" Simon Says- use active movements as the cues.
  • Explore your local outdoor spaces- parks, greenways, and neighborhood.
