Cardiac catheterization is referred to as a “dye test of the heart.” A small, soft tube (the catheter) is inserted in an artery in the groin area, and is passed into the heart through this artery. Once the catheter is in the appropriate place, dye is injected through the artery and pictures are taken. The procedure is used to determine whether additional intervention is needed.
The procedure itself takes approximately one hour to 1½ hours to complete. Both inpatients and outpatients go through a pre-screening process and are educated on the procedure. Following the procedure, patients go to a special recovery area for up to six hours of observation.
